Athletes train their body.
They train their skills.
But most never train their mind.
That's the gap HEADFIRST closes.
HEADFIRST is the Philadelphia Union Foundation's mental fitness initiative – built for players, parents, and coaches who are ready to train the inner game that determines everything else.
Pressure is part of the game. Every athlete feels it. Most environments give them nothing to do with it.
No tools. No shared language. No framework for what they’re already feeling.
So we built one.
Free. Direct. Built for sport.
Not adapted from a clinical model. Not a wellness program with a soccer logo on it. A mental fitness system designed for the way athletes actually live – in locker rooms, on car rides home, on phones between practices, in the quiet before a big game.
HEADFIRST gives players, parents, and coaches what they actually need:
- Free mental health toolkits covering topics like anxiety, depression, grief, bullying, and social media — written in athlete language, not clinical language
- Education Training Sessions — in-person and virtual workshops for players, parents and coaches
- The Mental Fitness Forum — an annual gathering that brings the entire soccer community together
- The Pressure Lab — a podcast that brings mental fitness conversations to every locker room, car ride, and commute This is not therapy. This is training. And the best athletes train it.
Our Story
In 2021, a young person connected to the Philadelphia Union Foundation community died by suicide. Someone who had everything ahead of them, a team, a future, a life in sport.
Doing nothing wasn't an option.
What began as a memorial became a decision: build something that actually changes outcomes. Not a response to a crisis. A system that prevents one.
HEADFIRST launched publicly on October 10, 2023 — in partnership with Independence Blue Cross and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Since then, we have reached more than 30,500 youth athletes across the Philadelphia region. Every resource, free.

But the number isn't the story.
The story is what we found when we actually went into the rooms.
Players were feeling pressure they didn't have language for. Parents could see something was wrong but didn't know what to say. Coaches cared deeply and had no tools. Everyone was trying. Nobody was aligned.
HEADFIRST fixed the alignment.
We started where we had access — soccer. Because sport is where young people spend their time, build their identity, and feel the most pressure to perform. The field gives us the door. Mental fitness walks through it.
The Headfirst Ritual
We use TAG IN to find out why you’re here. We use the Pressure Lab to keep the conversation going. We use professional-backed training to give coaches the language. And we use the bag tag on every player's bag to make sure there is always a way in.
This is bigger than a program. It is bigger than a sport. This is about preparing young people for pressure — in the game, and in life. And it starts with one question:
Why are you here? We're listening.
In a few honest words, tag in with the heart of why you're here: why you play, why you coach, why you care. Add your voice to a space that puts every player's whole self first.
"I play because it's the only place I feel like I can't fail at everything."
